Hi, there! We are Ilse and Brent.
We live in the small town of Hoedspruit on the western border of the Greater Kruger Park in South Africa and we love to explore. Geographically, our exploration so far has been limited to Southern Africa, however, we believe that the sky is the limit, and that there are still many things out there to see, experience and marvel at.
We might be described as two children masquerading as adults and in many ways that is true. We are already on the wrong side of 50 and although we have done the "very suburban, very middle class" thing, we have also had the absolute honour to work in the game lodge industry, which took us to some amazing places in Southern Africa. We have opted not to have any children and this has allowed us the opportunity to move our base in Southern African a few times with greater ease than folks with kids can, not to mention the ability to take our holidays when it suited us, mostly out of school holidays.
The blog came into being because we would like to share some of what we have seen and done and we hope to inspire a similar thirst for exploration in others. We firmly believe that everybody should broaden their horizons and so become richer in mind and spirit. Also, having learnt from experience, we would like to share tips, warn of pitfalls and point out small joys that may easily be overlooked when travelling. We prefer journeys that go off the beaten track and you will find a lot of road-tripping, camping and nature-loving in the tales. However, other types of travel will not be excluded.
Ilse does the words (being a woman, and all) while Brent is the technology guru and sees that all the bla-bla-bla is prettily packaged and available for you to read. We both take photos, however, Brent is the professional, so some photos you see will be better than others.
Our experiences will not assist travelers who are looking for kiddy- or pet-friendly holidays, or who are exclusively in the market for super-luxurious getaways. However, should you love nature, affordable new experiences and enjoy roughing it a bit now and then, hop aboard. Teenage children are welcome, without their cellular communication devices!
